Escondido

Escondido is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County and has an area of about 37 square miles with a population of about 150,000. In Spanish, “escondido” translates to “hidden” which could refer to its location nestled between mountains or referring to the fact that it is a “hidden secret” as a destination to reside in. There is a developed city and many surrounding suburbs, providing a perfect blend of big city buzz and small town hominess. There are people of all income levels here, many parks and opportunity for outdoor recreation, and is a great place to call home for everyone from children to retirees.

Communities

Many different communities exist in Escondido. Communities range from recent migrants working hard to adopt the American way of life to wealthy homeowners living on large estates. Housing units in Escondido are older, with a majority of homes being built before 1990. There are many suburban communities composed of single family homes, as well as high rise apartments, town homes, and other multi-unit complexes throughout this area. Development continues to grow in Escondido today. The zip codes in Escondido are 92025, 92026, 92027, 92029, 92030, 92033, and 92046.

People

Escondido residents are diverse ethnically and by age, but all residents share a strong work ethic. In the city, there are many young Hispanic residents that are married or single, with or without children. Many were born abroad and work in service jobs such as food service, farming, or building maintenance. In the suburbs outside of the city are many residents in their 40s to approaching retirement. These residents are well educated with about two thirds having a college degree. They work in professional jobs and are likely to have children older than 18 living with them. All Escondido residents are well connected via the internet and technology.

Environment

Escondido has many areas with medium to high pollution scores and low incomes as calculated by CalEnviroScreen. The pollution scores could indicate a population vulnerable to pollution related issues. High rates of dust and pollution particles may increase the spread of viruses, worsening the COVID-19 crisis in communities with already low defenses. Additionally, some parts of the area lie in high fire threat districts. These environmental qualities could qualify some residents for rebates and incentives for Solar Power, Plug-In Vehicles (and EV Charging), or Energy Storage installations, lowering the cost of these installations.
