About National City
In San Diego communities, Makello supports non-profit organizations with grant and program funded community development. For example, in Southeastern San Diego Chollas Creek, Makello supports Groundwork San Diego with community education at Plug-In Vehicle events, city planning committee meetings, and presentations. Makello educates staff, parents, and students about Plug-In Vehicles, Solar Power, and Energy Storage. Visit our grants page for updates about a multi-million dollar win for San Diego!
National City
National City is the second-oldest city in San Diego County and covers about 9 square miles with a population of about 60,000. It is located in the center of a thriving bi-national region with millions of consumers and is very well connected, with only a 10 minute drive to San Diego Bay, the Mexican-American border, or downtown San Diego. Business thrives here, ranging from small family owned businesses to multi million dollar corporations. There are many shopping centers, and National City is home to the “Mile of Cars.” There are many parks and other recreation centers, as well as golf courses and historical sites.
Communities
National City neighborhoods are found in densely populated urban and suburban areas, and there is a rich blend of cultures here. It is a largely Hispanic community, with many residents communicating and participating in Spanish traditions. There is a mix of multi unit apartments and single family homes. A majority of residents here are renters. These are established neighborhoods, with many of the buildings being built before 1960. The zip codes in National City are 91902, 91947, 91950, 91951, and 92136.
People
Many residents here are foregin born, and most of the residents are Hispanic. People here speak both English and Spanish, and some residents only speak Spanish. National City has a young, diverse family market. There are many married couples with or without children as well as single parents, and there are many multigenerational households with grandparents. Residents here are hard workers and spend money to support their children. They are environmentally and status conscious, and they purchase products that reflect their style and values.
Environment
National City has many areas with high pollution scores and low incomes as calculated by CalEnviroScreen, representing a population vulnerable to pollution related issues. High rates of dust and pollution particles in disadvantaged communities may increase the spread of viruses, worsening the COVID-19 crisis in communities with already low defenses. These environmental qualities could qualify some residents for rebates and incentives for Solar Power, Plug-In Vehicles (and EV Charging), or Energy Storage installations, lowering the cost of these installations.

National City Solar Panel Installation
National City may be eligible for up to 100% incentives for solar installations. For more information, see the incentives summary below.
Installation
The homes in National City face unique challenges, due to the age of the electrical panel, wiring, and roof. Makello has 7 ways to install solar without roof penetrations! (5 that you can take with you when you relocate!)
Our installation training, process, and documentation ensures the highest quality workmanship. We don’t lose sleep at night when it’s raining, and with us, neither will you! Visit our Why Makello page to learn more about why we have no roof leaks.
Solar Irradiance
National City has excellent solar irradiance, making adoption of solar technology a wise investment, with fast payback in as little as 3 years for cash purchase, or cash-flow positive monthly loan payments. See how much you can save.
Adoption Rate
Solar energy adoption rates in South County San Diego are estimated to be between 5% and 10% of homes having solar photovoltaic (PV) panel installations.
Energy Independence
Many residents and business owners in National City are interested in utilizing technology that is eco-friendly and improves quality of life. Solar energy systems are increasingly affordable, especially after energy efficiency measures reduce use, and incentives and financing options reduce the up front cost. Installing solar energy helps reduce energy costs while creating energy independence, which is especially useful during the peak use hours, rolling brown outs, or planned power outages.

Benefits for All
Plug-In Vehicles are a great way to show your attention to style and concern for the environment. Driving with zero greenhouse gas emissions contributes to cleaner air quality and may help lower potential pollution-related negative health impacts such as asthma, low birth weight, or complications for cardiovascular disease. Driving electric is also quieter, helping to reduce noise pollution related stressors.
Using public transportation also helps reduce air pollution! If you currently use or are interested in using public transportation, visit San Diego’s 5 Big Moves and MTS’s ElevateSD 2020 campaign to get ready for the clean transportation revolution.
Don’t just take our word for it, listen to Groundwork San Diego’s high school Green Team explain the benefits of Plug- In and Electric Vehicles.
